Description
Your one-time donation will help fund a neighborhood Wildfire Evacuation Plan!
WIRCA and Waialae Iki V have been awarded a wildfire grant covering nearly 80% of a professional Wildfire Hazard and Evacuation Assessment. WIRCA needs to raise $6,708.50 to close the funding gap. This is a one-time ask — not a dues increase.
- How fast could a wildfire reach our homes from the gulch?
- Can all 900 of us actually get out in time on our one road out?
This request is for WIRCA’s portion only.

We’ve had two gulch fires – in 2017 and 2022. The gulches are filled with invasive, highly flammable fuel directly adjacent to our homes. Our ridge has one way in and one way out. We all have people on this hill we care about: kūpuna, families with young children, and neighbors who would need a little more time to get out. An evacuation that works for the fastest among us may not work for everyone. This assessment will tell us what we need to do differently.
We are working with Dudek who will use fire behavior modeling software to simulate how a wildfire would spread from the gulch under worst-case wind and fuel moisture conditions, estimating time of arrival at our homes from various ignition points. They will then run a traffic simulation to model a real evacuation on our road network, accounting for road geometry, slopes, travel speeds, smoke, and congestion, to determine whether we can actually get everyone out before the fire arrives. The result will be a Community Wildfire Mitigation Plan with maps, a formal evacuation route, shelter-in-place options, and specific recommendations for both communities.
This plan belongs to our neighborhood and will guide decisions for years to come.
